This year we said goodbye to Marvel co-founder Stan Lee. As the creator of the X-Men, the Hulk, Spider Man and Iron Man, he crafted a cast of relatable outcasts who ultimately triumphed over adversity.
Growing up reading X-Men comics (how could I not be captivated by the likes of Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Gambit and Rogue?!), I became familiar with stories filled with discrimination and persecution. Society deemed that having mutant powers was abhorrent and an act of the devil. But beneath those dark undertones, were stories of hope and wanting to change society for the better.
It dawned on me that these stories advocated for self-acceptance and compassion. In an age where society pressures seem unsurmountable, these messages are more important than ever.
Countdown to Christmas! From 1 to 24 December, I will share some of my key reflections and learnings from 2018.
