Kai and Kōrero: Next event on 16 August

The Māori and Pasifika Careers Network are pleased to host our next Kai and Kōrero event on Thursday 16 August.

This month’s focus is on the issue of race and diversity.  New Zealand, and in particular Auckland, is a wonderfully multi-cultural place and Māori and Pasifika people make up a significant part of the cultural fabric of the city.

Damon Salesa alludes to the change in his recent book Island Time:  The task of living in modern New Zealand – and especially in modern Auckland – is not just to understand how to live with different peoples, but how to adapt to the future that has already happened.

As with any society, cultural misunderstandings, stereotyping, racial profiling and racist attitudes exist, and it’s all too easy to sweep such issues under the carpet.  Conversations about race are often uncomfortable, but this session will give us insight into how we can go about them in a safe and respectful manner.
